Bayesian Confirmation Theory and The Likelihood Principle

چکیده

The likelihood principle (LP) is a core issue in disagreements between Bayesian and frequentist statistical theories. Yet statements of the LP are often ambiguous, while arguments for why a Bayesian must accept it rely upon unexamined implicit premises. I distinguish two propositions associated with the LP, which I label LP1 and LP2. I maintain that there is a compelling Bayesian argument for LP1, based upon strict conditionalization, standard Bayesian decision theory, and a proposition I call the practical relevance principle. In contrast, I argue that there is no similarly compelling argument for or against LP2. I suggest that these conclusions lead to a restrictedly pluralistic view of Bayesian con-

Estimation of the Parameters of the Lomax Distribution using the EM Algorithm and Lindley Approximation

Estimation of statistical distribution parameter is one of the important subject of statistical inference. Due to the applications of Lomax distribution in business, economy, statistical science, queue theory, internet traffic modeling and so on, in this paper, the parameters of Lomax distribution under type II censored samples using maximum likelihood and Bayesian methods are estimated. Wherea...

Bayesian and Iterative Maximum Likelihood Estimation of the Coefficients in Logistic Regression Analysis with Linked Data

This paper considers logistic regression analysis with linked data. It is shown that, in logistic regression analysis with linked data, a finite mixture of Bernoulli distributions can be used for modeling the response variables. We proposed an iterative maximum likelihood estimator for the regression coefficients that takes the matching probabilities into account. Next, the Bayesian counterpart...

Bayesian Confirmation Theory: Inductive Logic, or Mere Inductive Framework?

Does the Bayesian theory of confirmation put real constraints on our inductive behavior? Or is it just a framework for systematizing whatever kind of inductive behavior we prefer? Colin Howson (Hume’s Problem) has recently championed the second view. I argue that he is wrong, in that the Bayesian apparatus as it is usually deployed does constrain our judgments of inductive import, but also that...

Improving the Performance of Bayesian Estimation Methods in Estimations of Shift Point and Comparison with MLE Approach

A Bayesian analysis is used to detect a change-point in a sequence of independent random variables from exponential distributions. In This paper, we try to estimate change point which occurs in any sequence of independent exponential observations. The Bayes estimators are derived for change point, the rate of exponential distribution before shift and the rate of exponential distribution after s...

Journal of the American Statistical Association

The concept of conditional experimental frames of reference has a significance for the general theory of statistical inference which has been emphasized by R. A. Fisher, D. R. Cox, J. W. Tukey, and others. This concept is formulated as a principle of conditionality, from which some general consequences are deduced mathematically. These include the likelihood principle, which has not hitherto be...
